Everything You Need to Know about Plumbing

Drain and Waste Problems

The most common drain problems that you are likely to encounter in your house or flat are slow or clogged drains. The symptoms are water running down very slowly or backing up in the tub or the sink, wet areas on your floors or walls, and wet areas near the drain piping; once you have identified your drain problem, you should try to find out what is causing it, what area of your residence it affects, and how to possibly fix it.

In most instances your drain problem will be confined to only one single sink or tub, but in cases where it is not clear where the problem originates, you should try to establish the route that the water travels before getting to the main drain.

Once you have localized the drain problem, you can try a few simple techniques in order to rectify it:

* In the case of a slow sink drain try pouring boiling hot water into the sink. This should dissolve soap residue and grease, but if it doesn’t work, then you can purchase some cleaning chemical products that are likely to dissolve most of the materials that cause clogging.
* Use a plunger to unclog your drain: when pushed, the plunger breaks the clog and when pulled up, it creates suction that is likely to bring that clog to the surface.
* Get under the sink, remove the trap and clean it out.
* If you cannot fix the problem yourself, you should call a plumber for assistance.
